Beginning January 6, 2020, all urine drug screen collectors, breath alcohol technicians and screening test technicians should use the employee’s CDL drivers license number and state of issuance when recording an employee’s id number on the testing form. Social security numbers and employee id numbers shouldn’t be used when performing a drug or alcohol test on a CDL license holder. In most cases the CDL license holder will be under the authority of the FMCSA agency.
The employer is responsible for providing the CDL information to the testing technician. If the employer does not supply this information, the testing technician should attempt to contact the DER to obtain it. If the DER is not available, you can ask the driver to see his CDL information. If you cannot obtain it, make a remark in the remarks section of the form that the CDL information was not supplied and could not be obtained, record another ID number such as social security or employee ID number on the form, and perform the test.
